With layoffs to the left and budget cuts to the right, what is
Calvert Funds to do with its perks? The Bethesda firm, famous for its massages and commuting subsidies, sticks out like a sore thumb among forests of pink slips and stentorian budgeteering.
"I'm not aware of any plans to cut them," said
Elizabeth Laurienzo, spokesperson for Calvert. "We've had them for many many years."
Besides 15-minute-long massages at Calvert's offices on a weekly basis, employees are eligible for 12 days per year of paid vacation for volunteer activities. "It encourages volunteerism," said Laurienzo, explaining the logic behind the policy.
Calvert will also continue to subsidize commuting expenses. Employees who walk to work are allowed to buy one pair of walking shoes a year, and bike commuters get a one-time contribution towards the purchase of a bicycle.
